Katrien Devolder
Dr. Katrien Devolder is a postdoctoral research fellow of the Scientific Research Fund – Flanders, affiliated with the Bioethics Institute Ghent (BIG), Department of Philosophy at Ghent University in Belgium. She has a master’s in Moral Sciences (Ghent University) and in Bioethics (Université Libre de Bruxelles) and a PhD in Philosophy (Ghent University). Her research interests focus on the ethics of the new biosciences, with a special interest in the ethics of stem cell and cloning research (the topic of her dissertation). She has worked as a consultant on these issues for several projects funded by the European Commission. Her postdoctoral research is a thorough evaluation of scientific answers and technical solutions to moral problems in the human embryonic stem cell debate, and the implications for public policy. Dr. Devolder intends to conduct this evaluation during her stay at the Program in Ethics and Health. She will identify the proposed solutions and subject them to a critical analysis. She will investigate how these scientific arguments interact with the ethical arguments, and how and to what extent science can be used to circumvent moral issues in the stem cell debate.
