Trygve Ottersen, MD

Trygve received his MD from the University of Bergen in 2009. He has an additional background in political philosophy and is currently working on a PhD-thesis on the ethics of priority-setting. More specifically, he addresses two questions. First, what aspect of someone’s health state should determine his or her priority for publicly provided care? Second, how can two crucial priority-setting principles – maximizing health and prioritizing the worse off – be appropriately balanced? Answers are sought by way of theoretical analyses as well as empirical studies in Norway and Tanzania. Trygve’s more general interests include distributive justice, health economics, development, and emergency medicine.
